Literacy Day 2021

Literacy Day 2021

September being the Rotary Month for Basic Education and Literacy, RI District 3291 added to purpose by marking out 18 & 19 September 2021, as Literacy Day !

On 18 September 2021, the dynamic all-women team of Rotary Club of Calcutta Avyanna took up their Day 1 Literacy Project called “ Notun Alo”, for the less privileged children, at Jujersa, in Panchla village of Howrah, West Bengal, as part of the Dist. 3291 Literacy Day drive.
Club President Rtn Apala Datta, began the day by addressing the children present at the venue and telling them about the reason for their visit.
The Club members were greeted with enthusiastic performances by the children. Their skit, their song, their dance and above all their smiling faces – won the heart of every Avyanna. It was truly gratifying to see the excitement of the children present, as the members distributed Stationery packets along with food packets, to each of them. About 100 children received packets containing 2 exercise books, 1 drawing book, 2 pencils and 1 eraser, each.
Special thanks to Club Member Rtn. Sharmistha Das for fully sponsoring the event. Also a round of applause for all the other team members who took the day off to be a part of this generous drive!

Rotary Club of Calcutta Avyanna had 2 projects lined up back to back for both the days! After the successful completion of the Day 1 project called “Notun Alo”, at Panchla, Howrah, Day 2 Literacy Day project was one with a completely different flavour. The project was executed on 19th September 2021, at Ananthamaya – an Elderly Care Home at Pujali, Budge Budge, where the Club members donated books, both old and new, to create a full-fledged Library (named ‘Kichhu Golpo’ by the Club) for the elderly inmates.

A total of 300 books were donated along with a number of popular magazines and journals, by the members. The members even joined hands to arrange the collection of books on the shelves.

The occasion was graced by District Literacy Chair and Past District Governor, Rtn. Mukul Sinha and Secretary General, Rtn. Tapan Roy.

PDG Rtn. Mukul Sinha complimented the array of books displayed on the shelves at the Elder Care Home and spoke on the implications of literacy in our everyday lives.

The entire initiative complemented by beautiful ambience of Ananthamaya, was indeed a fulfilling experience for the Club members. Way to go, Avyannas!
